The chairman of the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria was surprised last week to learn his tribe will receive a $4,000 grant from the independent federal grant-making agency that supports libraries and museums.

Mechoopda Tribal chairman Steve Santos and education director Lessie Schweninger said they hadn't received official notification about the grant, but the smiles on their faces showed they were happy at the news.

"We're extremely excited about the award,"
